I wrote this song as I grew ever more anxious about getting a "real" job. I was a few months away from graduating from grad school, and I really hadn't looked too much into the job market, both out of fear and just not thinking I needed to yet. But, the crash was just starting, and I had this feeling, this premonition of what it was going to be like 6 months later. And so far, I am right. I still am “overeducated and underpaid.” How about you? I wanted to specifically address the issues women face when it comes to getting equal wages and fair treatment in the workplace. I think I get a gold star for this one.
lyrics
I got a rejection letter in today
It said you’re not qualified
“You’re just not enough” that’s what they say
I guess things just don’t go my way
I got a call the other day
They said you’re over-qualified
“We’d have to give you benefits” that’s what they say
No matter what I do, it’s all work and no pay
I got
Chorus:
Pink slips and pink collar jobs
Keep on fighting against all odds
I'm over-educated and underpaid
Trying to make a decent wage
I got an interview yesterday
I knew I was in, until I heard
“You know you’ve got a great ass”
They didn’t care I graduated top of my class
I got a job, yesterday
They said I had a great future there
But then the economy crashed
And they tossed my out with last night’s trash
All I got is
Chorus
Chorus 2:
Endless searching, unemployment lines
Fill out this form, pay a fine
My oh my, it puts me in a rage
Trying to make a decent wage
